It is a demanding outdoor adventure that takes you above the height of 6000 meters to applaud some impressive views of the mountain range and other mountainous terrains.
Island peak in Nepal, also referred to as Imja Tse, is a beautiful peak that rises tall at an elevation of 6189 meters within the periphery of Sagarmatha National Park in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal.
Why Island Peak Climbing?
Climbing Mt. Everest may probably not be suitable for all, as it is time-consuming, physically demanding, as well as expensive. For those looking for a workable option, Island Peak is the perfect alternative for adventure lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts in mountaineering. If you are a vivacious and genuinely fit trekker with next to zero involvement with mountain expeditions, then you can go for it.
The Island Peak Climbing provides essential mountaineering experiences for trainee climbers. And yet, although it is easier to climb Island Peak than any other high-altitude mountain, you should never underestimate the power of a Mountain.
In Island Peak Expedition, you will reach not only the summit but also experience trekking in the Everest region. It is incredible involvement in the Himalayas of Nepal.
Some more facts about Imja Tse
The British Mt. Everest expedition team gave the name “Island peak” in 1953 as the pinnacle showed up as an island in the ocean of ice from a perspective at Dingboche. Though it was named Imja peak later, the summit is still popular as the Island peak. Also, the Island Peak extends a ridge that falls from the south end of the Lhotse Shar. A British expedition team first climbed Island peak in 1953 as a part of the training for the Mt. Everest expedition.
Island Peak Climbing via EBC
We follow the classic route to Everest Base Camp to climb Island Peak. It starts with a flight to Lukla and follows a trail up to EBC. The trek to Island Peak also walks us through the countryside, where we immerse ourselves in centuries-old Nepalese and Tibetan cultures. The trail traverses through the Sagarmatha National Park and passes various Sherpa villages on the way to Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and then to Gorekshep. Filled with Buddhist shrines, these villages of stone charms our path to the mountain.
Finally, the trail climbs up to Everest Base Camp. A hike up to Kalapatthar offers some extraordinary and stunning views of mountains in the Everest region like Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Nuptse, and Khumbu icefall. The trek to Everest Base Camp, on the one hand, gives you the delight of being on top of the world. It is helpful for acclimatization to your climbing journey ahead.
Leaving Everest Base Camp, the trail drops to Dingboche and heads to Chukhung and Island Peak in the Imja valley. Chukhung is the last tea house to stop at Island peak. Here, we assemble our climbing gear and practice for the climb ahead. Finally, we start our glacier walk and climb up the steep snow and ice slope to the summit of Island peak. We will use rope, ice ax, and other climbing gear to reach the summit. You will then see some of the magnificent views of Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Everest from the top of Imja Tse.
Island Peak Difficulty
Island Peak is one of the trekking peaks. A beginner-level climber wishing to enter the mind-boggling universe of mountaineering can climb the peak. When compared to other mountains, this peak is tricky to climb. However, with firm determination and the best individuals in the field, you can climb ascend easily. As it lies at a high altitude, you are likely to get altitude sickness. So, we will make it easier, spending some days in the mountains acclimatizing to the low oxygen levels. But if you wish to reduce the number of days in the climb, you will lower the success rate of the summit.
Somewhere the weather is extreme, the path is slippery and challenging, and you are always required to be alert, follow the instructions from the guides sincerely, and best of all, enjoy your journey. You will have a Sherpa guide with you pushing for your success to climb the summit of Island Peak. So, if you have a strong will and are physically fit, you can reach the summit.
Energies and Precautions for the Summit
This trekking and expedition is an exciting package that takes you through Everest base camp with a climb to Island Peak. The journey is pretty challenging and demands your mental and physical strength for good return rewards. As you will get in close to the land of the Himalayas, you will experience the natural beauty, significant culture, and social with the local Sherpa’s at its best.
The journey is well prepared and developed, considering your well-being, safety, satisfaction, and enjoyment. You are required to listen and follow the instructions of the guides: don’ts, weather, dos, and don’ts. Likewise, your guide will teach you the proper ways to handle the equipment, like crampons, boots, ropes, ice axes, harnesses, and carabineers.
Best Time for Island Peak Expedition
The best time of the year to climb Island Peak is during spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November). These seasons coincide with Everest Expedition timing, so along the climbing course, you will experience many Expedition groups during the long periods of April and May. Further, if you are a beginner mountaineer and need to enjoy the best ascending experience and view, then we recommend you to climb the Island Peak during spring. It is likewise one of the busiest climbing periods of the year.
Further, summer invites rain, which may cause Avalanches in some places. The thick fog grooving around the mountain obscures the views, and rainfall disrupts the climbing journey. So we do not recommend Island Peak Expedition during summer. If the time and season don’t favor your schedules, then you might opt for off-season climbing in winter. But you should be well equipped and ready to face the extreme situation. Because of heavy snowfall and extreme cold, it can bring more challenges in front of you. Also, most of the tea houses remain closed. So, people don’t prefer Island Peak climbing in winter.
